Japan Donates Over Ush 601 Million to Grassroots Projects
in Four Districts
The Japanese Embassy in Uganda has signed a grant contract with four organisations for community development projects: Construction of an extensive outpatients department in Pope John’s Hospital Aber in Oyam District, construction of a general ward in St. Lucia Kagamba Health Centre IV in Ntungamo District, provision of equipment at Hospice Africa’s palliative care clinic in Kampala, and drilling and installation of 13 boreholes in Amuria district. The projects amounts to over Ush 601 million and will improve the living standard of the vulnerable people to meet their basic human needs.
The Ambassador H. E. Keiichi Kato signed on behalf of the Japanese government with the representatives of recipient organisations which include Pope John’s Hospital Aber, St. Lucia Kagamba Health Centre, Hospice Africa Uganda and Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI).
In his speech, the ambassador praised the organisations for their participation in community empowerment which was evident by their ability to identify the gaps and apply for the funding to address them. He emphasized that community development can only be achieved through collective participation and commitment.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community-based development projects. Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with Africa through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidation of peace and good governance in Africa.
